What do you do if you're single? The pressure to buy a good gift or to make a wonderful and elaborate night to remember. And what kind of chocolate do you even buy? Do you waste your money on expensive gifts or do something else with it? I don't even know where to buy flowers. See it's tough. Oh and the Valentine's Day massacre. Yep that's always fun. So I decided to write this for my mom. You know, even though all that stuff makes it not my favourite holiday, I still made an effort. Enjoy. Olivia xx Ps. Sorry if you've already seen this too, and yeah I do know it's no longer February 14.

A Streetlamp
by Olivia Sykes December The air is cool and full of cigarette smoke A cough rises from the throat of an old woman The tap of her cane on the street’s cobblestones Muffled by the damp snow It’s evening People passing Crunching of boots in slush and snow Fallen the night before The click of a busy man’s lighter is heard Click click The ball of fire light turns on and off Chests heavy with a day's work Rise and fall with each cold intake of breath Rising, falling The gaze of a young woman is averted to the ground Passers-by are too busy to notice her tear-stained cheeks Too preoccupied to ask why she has no coat Streets are somber Silent The only voices heard are whispers in the winter wind A man walks past a street lamp Such a hurry No destination Eyes so clear Like ice sheets glazed with melting snow It turns on and illuminates the darkness of the paved sidewalk Click click The light turns on and off Dark seconds between its flickering Window sills full of solemn shadows Stars absent from the mourning sky Darkness thicker than blood Footsteps snuffed out by the snow are seldom heard The scutter of a shop owner dashes quickly into the night Click click The lamp turns off The bulb burnt out No one tries to relight it Most people have probably already read this... I'll post it anyways. Dear readers, read carefully on from here. There is much to see and much to hear. Only once a year does New Years come around. Okay that came out of nooooowhere. Guys how are you? Because I'm great. So last we left off we had Christmas and it was very nice. We had a beautiful time skiing and ate many delicious food. Now after that we drove all the way home and packed our bags for the Maldives.
So we woke up and got ready to drive to the airport while it was freezing cold outside. This was time for strategic cold-hot travel dressing. Oh you don't know strategic cold-hot dressing? Well it's when you have to be really smart on how you dress when you travel somewhere hot while it's cold back home. DON'T DENY IT we have all done it. The pure morning struggle. So after we accomplished this daring feat of getting dressed, we hopped in the car. When we finally reached the airport, got through security and all the other bits I don't really know, we found our departure gate and waited. And waited. And waited. Oh can you guess what we did next? No I bet you can't because we WAITED. Okay perhaps I'm exaggerating but it was a long time yo! The plane ride was pretty sweet. Okay yeah I guess Owen and I are spoiled children now right? Because we went on a business class flight and it was heaven. Like chocolate sprinkles IN a chocolate fountain. But hey what can you do? We went to coach seats and it was honestly fine. We still had TV's and I watched 'Me Before You' because there were just too many actors I loved in it. Emilia Clarke, Sam Claflin and Neville Longbottom. How can that go wrong? I mean it was sad and I'm not going to spoil anything huge or whatever... but he dies and she cries. YEAH YEAH go ahead honk your horns at me! Blow your whistles! Pull out your SpongeBobs! (What is with me and SpongeBob?) If you haven't seen it yet you probably weren't going to so don't pout at me. After the plane we landed in Male WHERE IT WAS SO FRIKIN HOT. I'm serious. And to top it all off it was raining like the Notebook, people! We took a ferry over to Male to stay in a hotel for one night before going to the resort. When we got to the other side on the island it was super hard to hail a taxi. Like when the-guy-was-getting-eaten-by-the-shark-and-trying-to-get-out-with-a-chainsaw-in-Sharknado hard! And it's tough to say but we were forced to kidnap a man and steal his pickup truck- what? What are you saying, that I can't tell the truth?!!?? FINE, Sorry Dad... OKAY I WON'T SAY ANYTHING! I'M SORRY! Um... I mean we just got in a truck. We didn't um STEAL it. NO NO. Okay but in all seriousness my dad, Owen and I had to sit in the back of the truck (the part that had no roof and is used to carry heavy things) while my mom was safe from the wind and rain inside. We got to the hotel and everyone was absolutely exhausted. Let's just say SOME male figure in the family was yelling at the guy who arranged our float plane scheduling on the phone. Not that he didn't deserve to be yelled at but um... I think the hotel guy thought we were either crazy or American. Maybe both. So we all finally crashed into our rooms and fell asleep. Okay maybe I watched like two YouTube videos but they were important! The breakfast was actually lovely. There were eggs (I don't like eggs) but it was still quite good. After we left we stayed at the airport for a while and the waiting game continued. It was hot so my mother got vacation hair, I got grumpy, my dad got a bag of chips and some coke and Owen did nothing really. He just kinda went on like normal. A few sandwiches later, the plane was ready to board. This wasn't really a large plane. It's the tiny ones that float on the water, but it was still pretty cool. Now we were on with either a large Spanish family or large Italian family, and they had one person too many. So to pull up another seat they had to take the bags out of the plane. AND GUESS WHOSE BAGS THEY WERE. Yep they were our bags! So when we landed we had to wait for a while before our bags came GAH. I sound so ungrateful but c'mon, how would YOU feel? When we landed we were given a water bottle and a cool cloth for our hands or neck or whatever, and it smelled like CINNAMON! And let me explain. The resort we were staying at was on one of many islands in the Maldives called the Cinnamon Hakuraa resort. Therefore... CINNAMON! So my father was told we were getting a beach bungalow and I was disappointed. OKAY YES TERRIBLE PERSON. I get to go on this wonderful trip and I'm upset. The thing was is that when I looked up pictures, they were bungalows on the water and it was what I though we were getting. So I obviously didn't say this out loud, and we continued walking until we reached a dock. But it was a beach bungalow... anyways we kept walking until room 110: A WATER BUNGALOW! I was so happy! I was jumping all around and yelling! YAY! It was great! Then we went for our buffet lunch and relaxed the rest of the day. So most days in the Maldives were just spent relaxing. Eventually we got into the routine of getting up for breakfast, then heading over to the hammocks which was basically private. There was only ever us there and it was seriously calming. They were in the PERFECT place. I swear. There was still sun but it was shaded where the hammocks were and there was a cool breeze constantly coming through so you were never too hot. After the hammocks we would go for lunch and return back to our bungalow to relax. Then at 3:00 we'd go snorkeling (they took you to a different place everyday!) and see all types of fish! We even saw clams and things I can only describe as giant sea caterpillars who are stuck to a rock. The fish were MASSIVE I swear they were going to eat you. And even the little ones had teeth! Then we would go to the lounge next to the dock and relax with a drink until we got bored and either would go straight to dinner or back to the room, and then dinner. After dinner, pretty much every night we would use the mini projector I got for Christmas and watched movies until we all fell asleep. Pretty great right? Sometimes we changed our routine, like instead of snorkeling we would swim in our backyard which was LITERALLY THE OCEAN, and Owen and I would chase each other around. Or one time my brother and my dad went fishing while my mom and I stayed in and watched movies and read on our back deck. It was a seriously luxurious time. At the beginning of this blog post I wrote about New Years but honestly we just had a big buffet next to the beach (it was raining so we had to stay indoors!) and fell asleep before the countdown. It just wasn't really the same but New Years day was still fun! There were a couple stories like when I caught the snorkeling thief (Owen) who had been taking my snorkel and fins! Or when I was walking along the dock and dropped one of my mom's flip-flops that I was borow ing in the ocean (a single shoe) and my dad had to grab a life ring off the side of some random person's bungalow to rescue it. OHHHHHHH who lives in a pinneaple under the sea?? THE. SYKES. FAM. LY! No not really, don't be scared! No one is in a pinneaple or under the sea! We're safe and everything. Ah but there was a time. A dark time in a land called 'Nozawaonsen' where we were in the snow! YES it was the snow! We stayed at a wonderful hotel but there were no shoes or feet allowed. So we had to walk in slippers EVERYWHERE.
So we were in this town that had 13 different onsens. What the heck is an onsen you say? It's like a hot tub but you have to go in naked. Yes naked, yes yes like a baby peach. All stripped down. A la nude. But don't worry, it was seperate with the women and men. They aren't monsters! So I mean my dad went, what a shocker. And my mom went. And Owen and I were like "Um...NO WAY! YOU CRAZY?!" So I read, Owen played video games. I had a drink, Owen had a snack. I read, Owen played video games. We stayed in an old style hotel. So the way it works is that your room is on a tatami mat, I can't explan it you gotta look it up. And you have this really low table with low seats and cushions...basically everything is really low. And they bring you this lovely tea. It's great! And during the night they put away the table and bring out futons to sleep on. They were surprisingly comfy. So in the morning we went for breakfast and you walk into this magical place. No seriously they greet you and then lead you to an old style, low to the ground, japanese room to eat your food. It's seriously cool. And the first day we were there they gave us a western style breakfast. It was okay and all but I mean I wanted a japanes style breakfast! After breakfast, my dad, my brother and I headed to the ski hill to catch some slopes! Or hit some slopes...ride the slopes? We went to the slopes okay! And wow that was high! They had gondolas and a billion chairlifts, and we had so much fun. We even got some green tea ice cream. ICE CREAM IS BETTER WHEN IT'S COLD OUTSIDE. I've said it before and I stand by that statement. So later that evening, we had a japanese style dinner. And we had a vegetable ball, some salmon and an orange geltinous ball. The ball was orange. It was round. And it was a jigggly jelly structure. I don't know what it was, but it was cool and different and WOWOWOW. And so my mom and I went outside to the foot onsen. It was like the normal onsen but just for your feet. And we relaxed and soaked our feet and it was nice! The next morning we wake up to some serious rain. And I mean RAIN. It was coming down bro! And we woke up, had some japanese style breakfast this morning and we headed off to get some more food. Now they had this special apple bun and MAN WAS THAT DELICIOUS. It was like a lil' apple pie. And we got these banana buns THAT WERE CRAZY GOOD. I mean it was all good. We got these red bean buns too. MMMMMM! I don't know why but everything tasted amazing. So as we left we decided to go see the snow monkeys. They are monkeys who live in the snow close to the hot springs. So we walked miles through the forest to see them and there were dozens of them! I mean there were some I thought were rocks that were actually monkeys. So, I am sitting on my couch, Wednesday morning, attempting to write a blog post. I have been super busy these past couple of days and haven't been able to write a single sentence. Today, I woke up with a mission! To get this post out of my 'drafts' and into my 'published' section! Well... we'll see if that happens.
Now Hida Takayama! Last weekend we took a 2 hour drive to this small Japanese town called Hida Takayama. During the drive I saw all kinds of things like trees and dirt and road... okay I mean that sounds pretty average but we did see mountains upon mountains. Oh and did I mention SNOW? Real snow. I hadn't seen snow in so long I was starting to think I'd never actually seen real snow. Was it white? Was is pink? Did it have rubies imbedded in it? Nope. It was just cold and white, how I'd always remembered it. After the drive we got to the cute little inn with a very nice Japanese lady. We left pretty late so by the time we actually arrived it was dark. She showed us to our rooms and we dropped our bags down. She gave us a nice recommendation for dinner, and we all got ready to leave since we were super hungry. Then the unthinkable thing happened. My father crashed our car. Hey woah woah. Not like crashed crashed. Here let me explain. So picture this: It's late at night and we're all super tired. There are super tight corners and walls made out of sharp stone. My dad is just going to move the car so that it's in the right parking space, and no aliens abduct us or anything... he should've just let the aliens come. He rounded the corner and BAM! We hit one of the stone walls. You gotta know that it was a super tight squeeze. An impossible squeeze. Picture like an elephant trying to get into a mouse hole. That just ain't happenin. So after the shock and some erm... foul language from my dear old dad, he dealt with it. Now, most people would just be mad and moody the whole night but my father was great! He didn't let it get to him and we had a pretty great evening stroll. Walking through the town, we could hear the laughter and the Christmas songs played over the speakers, it was magical. Then when we got to the restaurant I tried a drink called 'Calpis'. It looks pretty weird and you would never expect the taste you get from it. This restaurant's food was divine. It was a 'cook your own meat and veggies' situation. Man that meat was good! (Check out the December page). It was lemonade on a cold winter's day. "Wait Olivia, isn't lemonade good on a summer's day?" No! Lemonade tastes way better in the winter. You should try it. When we were done we went to the convienience store to get some ice cream. MMMMMMM! Ice cream is always better in the winter! I don't know why but it is. I always want it more when it's freezing outside. After some wine my mom was a little drunk. She was walking around all weird and making no sense. So she was pretty much acting like me when I'm perfectly normal. So that was pretty fun. And when we FINALLY made it back to the inn, we sat in our rooms. I got the only Japanese style room to myself! It was pretty cool. There was a tatami mat and everything. So we were all set to go in the hot tub. I was all ready and about to go in when my dad came out and said to me in all seriousness, "Olivia, there is a naked man sitting in that hot tub." Say no more I WAS OUTTA THERE!!! And I shoulda known this, but my dad stayed in and chatted with him. After half an hour, my mom, Owen and I all realized he wasn't going to be back for a while. My mom even said to me he was sitting in the naked guy's room drinking beer. Not only, with just the one naked guy but also with the naked guy's friend. So eventually I kicked my mom and bro out of my room, finished the last chapters of my book, and went to sleep. The next morning we had some amazing food. The breakfast at that place was truly phenominal. We cooked our own meat with mizo sauce, had some mizo soup, fish, rice and green tea. Then we checked out of the hotel and headed to the market. It was a beautiful place, really and they had some pretty great food. We got some apples and blueberries. My parents bought these cookie cups and got espressos, while Owen and I got some hot chocolate. MMMM!!! We continued walking until we found this museum for Japanese floats. These things are massive and beautiful. They all look wonderful in theor unique ways but also together. Each have their own special feature and they all generally look amazing. On our way back to the market we decided to buy a bonzai tree. His name is Christopher and he is a good tree. Love him <3. Chris Osman told me to buy one so I said "Ok" and we did. And I named it after him. Miss you Chris! You are a good dad so keep being you! After the bonzai tree we wondered over to this shop and saw a bunch of cool looking things. I got this cute, Japanese, good luck charm that is now on my purse. So as we were leaving my dad spotted this marvellous model of one of the floats. What a beauty. He found the owner of the store and the guy told my dad that thing had been sitting there for 30 YEARS! THIRTY YEARS!!! THIRTY. Can you believe that? Because we couldn't. Long story short we bought the model and are happy as can be. So that was a wonderful trip. Really, it was great. I'm so happy my parents took me and just can't wait until Christmas so that I can give them something back! Love you mom and dad, hope you like your gifts. To everyone else, Merry Christmas! Keep wishing for hipopotamusses and two front teeth. Don't forget it. Sayonara and to all a good night! HO HO HO! -Olivia Oh hey didn't see you there. Yes it's me, it's actually me! Okay yes I know I have some explaining to do. Well you see when I first started this blog I was totally for posting daily, but then I realized something: my life is pretty boring. I don't have that many things to say on a day to day basis and I'm also just a pretty busy person. You know gotta keep the grades up! So I decided to not post everyday and I'm sorry I know you love me and I'm just unforgettable, but sadly I do have things to do and I will still try and post as much as I can!
Okay so on to the story, this is one that I like to call 'Meat down the Hatch'. So imagine this: a girl and her friends are walking outside ready to eat some delicious mashed potatoes, some great zucchini, a beautiful apple dessert and some okay roast beef. You know it wasn't really all that magnificent. It was average. Half way to heaven but stuck as an earthly mortal. This girl sat down and started to eat this food. She got to the zucchini and had a couple bites of regular salad, and decided to eat her roast beef. She said "Why don't I try it and save the good stuff for later? I'll give the beef a try" So she took a bite and swallowed. Then when she continued eating, her throat started to feel horrible and I'll save you the gruesome details but you should know that it was pretty bad and the girl had to go to the nurse. So the girl's mother came and because the world was against her, the girl had no car. You see this girl had just arrived in a new country and her family was just using public transportation. The perilous journey through the subway and train commenced and not every paper bag came out alive. So a couple hours later, the girl's parents were like "Whoa dude something is wrong let's go vaminos to l'hôpital tomodachi." and off they went. Back through the horrifying public transportation and when they finally got to the hospital the girl was able to rest. She lay down and let them do blood tests and a CT and anything else they needed! 'Just fix me' was all she wanted! Now at this time the girl was very confused and had no idea what was wrong. All she knew was that she simply could not swallow. It was just not working sugar. So after extensive tests the doctors were stumped. That's when the girl said "Look I don't know what's wrong! All I ate was vegetables and like a little bit of roast beef but it wasn't enough to block up my throat... I think." That's when the girl knew: she screwed up. Okay so you've probably guessed by now this girl is me. It's just uh a bit embarrassing... So the doctors found a big mass of something in my throat. (Dunno how they missed a giant mass in my throat the first time, like shouldn't that be quite obvious?? But hey I'm no medical professional.) So I went into this room on a wheelchair, proper Grey's Anatomy style, and I went under. I remember nothing afterwards but apparently I was really floppy and loopy, and asked for a meal but only had a few bites. So there you are. My crazy story but it's about time for a hospital visit from me right? I mean isn't it a tradition for me now? I'm sorry for my lack of posting again but hopefully I'll have more soon! Bye Udon noodle space warriors! -Olivia "The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls." -Pablo Picasso
"This world is but a canvas to our imagination."-Henry David Thoreau "Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art." -Ralph Waldo Emerson "Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. They had sculptures and paper cut-out artwork on display, as well as wooden furniture. They had paintings from so many different periods and the brush strokes and colours were amazing. I had a really great time just staring at the artwork and probably could've stayed there all day long. Check out some of them on the November page! Hey there stranger, it's me.
Okay okay, I know I've been bad and haven't posted anything in quite a while. I've been busy, I really have. No I didn't train a monkey to build a house (I'M SORRY!!!) but I have started building that rocket to Mars soooo... No but really I've been quite sick and had this massive project on the French Revolution, but I do think you should here about this experience at the Nagoya botanical gardens and the zoo. So here we goooooo... So I woke up. Not ready for animals, not ready for plants. What I was ready for was just a simple day inside and I got an outing. We saw plants of all kinds when we entered the botanical gardens. I loved it. You just felt so peaceful and ready for nature. It was like breathing in something fresh but different from food fresh. It was just air but it felt magical. Yeah magical air okay? Sue me. The trees were so so beautiful and they had such lovely flowers. The smell they emitted was just the most wonderful feeling. When we wandered down the steps we could see mountains and plants all around us. I suggested we sit at a bench and then when we did it was just silence. Eery silence, but a silence that was also comforting and peaceful. Later on when we had gathered our bearings from the bench and went on to a rose garden bursting with beautiful roses! There were thorny ones, delicate ones and simply radiant ones. I loved the way they smelled and I loved that there was a waterfall behind the garden. And there was a lookout type of place where you had a really beautiful view of the place. Before we moved on, we stopped by a food truck and got some yummy french fries but they were extra long and looked like giraffe tongues but uh french fries. The first animal we saw at the zoo was a crane and right behind it was a giraffe.I thought this was strange since you don't usually associate these animals with each other but even weirder was the ostrich in the giraffe enclosure! After that we saw some koalas in an indoor enclosure. They never looked at me so either they were sleeping or were upset I wasn't food. I mean, wouldn't you be? After that we saw some flippy penguins and seals. Well some of the seals were flippy but most just lay there as seals do. And the penguins were really quite something. They were going so fast I lost count how many times they went around and around! They were amazing. I guess I need to watch Happy Feet a couple more times. Get caught up on my penguin knowledge. Now to the pink category. Yes the PINK category!! We saw some wonderful pink flamingoes and some white ones too because they were just little. They were impressing some photographers and the one I call Kenny was very pleased with the camera's attention. That's not all! There was also a type of pink pelican. He was short and funny and pink. Piiiink. I think that was one of the cool ones! We proceeded to see lions, bears, rhinos, elephants, deer, otters, and monkeys! The monkeys were very cool. So cool, I must tell you about the jumpy ones. I have no clue what they are called but they kept jumping all over their enclosure and bouncing from branch to branch. The one I call Martin even pushed one of his buddies off! There were two fighting over a paper bag and a baboon with a paper bag he pulled everywhere he went. Then there was rainbow but. Rainbow butt was like something out of a si-fi movie. His whole butt was rainbow coloured and he had a very interesting face! He might've been my favourite:) The coolest one was a hippo at the end! He was very scary and quite magnificent. I think he was just spectacular!! The greatest moment was when he opened his mouth so wide all of a sudden and scared me so much that I jumped. All in all, it was a magnificent day full of fun! I'm so so SOOOOO sorry for not blogging in so long but I've been sick as a dog and busy as a beaver. I will try to keep posting more often. Peace out butter puffs, Olivia xx P.s. Check out the pictures on my November page! I wish I could live in a world

Sadly before we begin I must tell you how I have committed a tsundoku. For those of you who do not know what this means, it's the act of buying a book and not reading it. I have done this. Yes I am ashamed and the new book smell is almost gone! It is a blasphemy I tell you! But, my job as this blog scripturient has taken up most of my time. For those of you fellow librocubicultarists out there, I am sorry that instead of books my bed has been taken up by my laptop. Okay I am done, onwards to the subject of school!!! Okay so first day. I was so nervous. My fingers kept tapping things. My knees, the windows, my bag, etc. When I'm nervous I get all red and I can't stop moving! It's so obvious to everyone when I'm nervous! But that mattered not, for my fellows scooped me up from my warm nest into cold reality and helped me through the day. There are really nice people at this new school o' mine. They lead me to every class and they ate with me at lunch. Okay that's a big one. I was so worried to eat alone but there's a real community of people there, and they're all just as weird as me! This school has a lot of different things and a different 'feel' than my old school. There's pictures everywhere and there's so many windows. Everything is pretty modern and there's so much more intimacy because there's not that many students. The teachers all seem to be really good and they're all very friendly (which is a bit of a nice change). On my way to school in that bus of kids I was worried about not fitting in. I really was. But all the girls there really took me in and seemed to like me. I'm really hoping I don't mess it all up by being obtuse, or brainless, or just saying the wrong thing. A couple days ago this all really bothered me. But now I'm feeling more accepted and I have less worries about that. If I take a step back and look at me I'm pretty cool. I have a mediocre style (very mediocre) and I think I'm pretty friendly. I'm quite unique and weird, but people at this school all seem to think that I am acceptable and fun. Look, it's no joyride on the banana raft, but I am so hoping to be able to enjoy myself, make great friends, and take advantage of this place. Tata for now amigos, Olivia |
